According to BESTITUDE, UX design is an abbreviation for User Experience Design. The user experience is a central factor in almost all digital offers, from the website to the mobile app. The UX design also plays an essential role in search engine optimization.
The UX design is a special segment of the web, app and software designs. Its task is to precisely analyze user needs and to align the user experience accordingly. The knowledge gained flows into the implementation of a user-friendly interface, for example. The versatile areas of application include websites, desktop programs and mobile apps.
UX can be understood as a component of human computer interaction. This takes place at every point of contact between humans and an end device. In connection with search engine optimization (SEO), user experience is important, since search engines use a positive user experience as a ranking factor for the search result lists.
History and evolution of UX design
User experience has become increasingly important as computer applications, software and websites have become more active. Computer-user interaction has played a growing role since Web 2.0 at the latest. In the past, computer applications were largely static: users passively access content. This has resulted in dynamic applications in which users interact with the end devices.
This results in growing user requirements and needs. In the course of this, web designers and developers continue to develop the applications and websites. This direction of development is known as user experience design or UX design for short.
An important development in the history of UX design is the widespread use of mobile devices. Since most users also and especially access web content and apps via smartphone or tablet, a responsive design is of great importance. The content must adapt to the requirements of the various screen sizes and operating systems.
This is a major change from the pre-smartphone era websites and programs that were primarily designed for desktop applications. For this reason, mobile usability or mobile optimization is now an important component of the user experience and thus of the design that is based on it.
UX design and its functionality
The UX design fulfills several functions in modern websites and programs. The functionality is continuously improved against the background of several requirements of the more demanding users. An important challenge is the users’ need for added value.
Furthermore, visitors need an app or a website with which they can find their way. This concerns, for example, the navigation on the site as well as an intuitive operation. The requirement that interaction with the website or app should be fun is also increasing.
The implementation of the user experience design basically serves to increase the usability of the website or the app. Closely related to UX design is so-called interaction design, which is also intended to optimize user-computer interaction.
UX design in search engine optimization
In SEO, the user experience has become one of the most important ranking factors. If the user experience is positive, important aspects such as the length of stay or the bounce rate are optimized. If a user feels comfortable on the site and finds added value, the length of stay increases while the bounce rate decreases.
These and similar factors contribute to a high ranking in the search result lists (SERPs) of search engines. In this context, it is particularly important to have good navigation in all areas of the page. On the side of an online shop, for example, the user experience plays an important role in the purchasing process, from the search function to the shopping cart to the checkout process.
UX design is also important in direct marketing, for example in the design of online advertising, especially for interactive advertising. Positive user experiences can also be helpful in customer acquisition and retention.
Differentiation between UX and UI design
There is a risk of confusion between the two task fields of user interface and experience design, whereby UI design is definitely related to UX design. UI design deals with the visual appearance of digital products, for example the attractiveness of a website or an app, and is therefore to be understood as a creative and artistic process.
UX design is more analytically oriented. For example, models from user psychology are used here. In the user experience, design decisions are typically justified scientifically, while the aesthetically oriented UI design leaves more room for the designer’s creativity. As a surface, the interface is the interface between humans and the end device, via which the user operates the machine. This makes the user interface design a part of the user experience.
Often, UX designers also take on the task of UI design. In addition, however, they deal with the broader scope of the entire user experience. This includes all expectations, interactions and reactions of the user before, during and after using the device.
