The university city of Lima

With around seven million inhabitants, Lima is the capital of Peru and by far the largest city in the country. Together with the port city of Callao, Lima forms a metropolitan region because the two places have now grown together. The capital is the most important economic and cultural center of Peru, and since 1991 the old town of Lima has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lima is geographically located on the Río Rímac on the dry and pleasantly warm west side of the Andes.

Characteristic of Lima is that most buildings in the city only have one to three floors. In addition to the actual city center, there are now many other centers that have increased in importance for Lima. The actual old town is built like a chessboard and has magnificent buildings that date back to the colonial era.

There are endless things to do in Lima in your free time, such as visiting museums, spending time in one of the many parks such as the large University Park, or going shopping. There are also beaches on the Costa Verde (Green Coast), which stretches between the districts of Miraflores and Chorrillos. Nightlife is also very lively, so it’s no wonder Lima is a popular tourist destination.
