U.S. time zones
Standard time and time zones were first introduced on US railroads in 1883. In 1918, the US Congress adopted the “Standard Time Act”, thereby legislating the system of dividing the country into time zones that had already actually developed by that time.
At present, the US Department of Transportation is responsible for determining the boundaries of time zones and other issues related to standard time in the US government. Federal legislation also determines the procedure for switching to daylight saving time.
The continental United States is divided into four time zones:
- Eastern time zone (designation ET)
- Eastern Standard Time UTC-05 EST
- Eastern Daylight Time UTC-04 EDT
- Central time zone (designation CT)
- Central Standard Time, UTC-06, CST
- Central Daylight Time, UTC-05, CDT
- Mountain time zone (UTC-07, designation MT)
- Mountain Standard Time, UTC-07, MST
- Mountain Daylight Saving Time, UTC-06, MDT
- Pacific Time Zone (UTC-08, designation PT)
- Pacific Standard Time, UTC-08, PST
- Pacific Daylight Time UTC-07 PDT
In Alaska, the Alaska time zone is set (designation AKT, standard AKST UTC -09 and summer AKDT UTC -08), in Hawaii and the Aleutian Islands – the Hawaiian-Aleutian time zone (designation HAT or HT, standard HST UTC -10 and summer HDT UTC – 09).
Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands are in the Atlantic time zone (designation AT, standard AST UTC −04 and summer ADT UTC −03), American Samoa (and Midway Island) are in the Samoan time zone (designation ST, standard SST UTC −11), the island of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands – in the Chamorro time zone (designation ChT, standard ChST UTC +10).
