During the Great Depression in Wisconsin, the industrial region of Milwaukee suffered the most, while the agricultural-oriented areas of the state suffered the economic crisis much easier. The rise in industrial production resumed during the Second World War and continued after its end.

On August 24, 1970, on the campus of the University of Wisconsin in the state capital of Madison, four young men blew up one of the university buildings, known as the “Sterling Corps”. This building housed a mathematical research center, which, among others, carried out orders from the US Army. As a result of the explosion, one person died and three were injured.
