New York state population

About 19,500,000 people live in the state of New York (the third most populous state in the US, after California and Texas). The average population density in the state is about 159 people per km 2 (seventh place in the USA).

New York State ranks second (after California) in the United States in terms of the number of immigrants coming here. At the same time, internal emigration from the state is also very high, primarily to Florida.

The largest city in the US is located in the state, which gave it a name – New York. The population of New York City (as the city is often called to distinguish it from the state) exceeds 8,175,000 people, and the metropolis “Greater New York” (which includes some settlements in the neighboring state of New Jersey) – about 19 000,000 people. About 70% of the state’s population lives in New York and its suburbs (more than 92% in cities).

Other major cities in the state are Buffalo (or Buffalo, more than 260,000 residents, the seventieth largest city in the United States), Rochester (more than 210,000 residents), Yonkers (about 200,000 residents) and Syracuse (Syracuse, about 150,000 residents). About 100,000 people live in Albany, the state capital of New York.

The largest (excluding New York City, of course) urban agglomerations were formed in the state of New York around the cities of Buffalo – Niagara Falls (in the area of Lake Erie and Niagara Falls, about 1,140,000 residents, forty-seventh place in the list of US megacities), Rochester (more than 1,050,000 people, 51st place) and Albany (the so-called “Capital District”, more than 850,000 residents).

  • Two or more races – 3.0%
