Early History of Nevada

In 1869, the construction of the first transcontinental railroad was completed, passing through Nevada and giving a powerful impetus to the further development of the state.

In 1874, the oldest educational institution in the state, the University of Nevada, was founded.

The next few decades, the development of Nevada is completely connected with the mining industry. Geological surveys continued throughout the state, and a number of deposits of gold, silver, copper and lead were discovered. Mining towns and villages arose, quickly grew and disappeared. The transport network gradually developed.

In 1905, the city of Las Vegas was founded, which later became the largest and most famous city in Nevada.

In 1909, Nevada, like other US states, banned gambling. But by this time, many deposits had already been exhausted, there were no other serious sources of income in the Nevada economy, and Nevada was going through the years of the Great Depression very hard.

In 1931, in order to revive the state’s economy, Nevada legislators decide to legalize gambling. The measure was thought to be temporary, but the games and the tourists they attracted have become the state’s main source of income. The first casino in Nevada after the lifting of the ban opened in March 1930 on Fremont Street in downtown Las Vegas under the name “Northern Club”. For the next forty years, Nevada became the only place in the United States where gambling was not banned.

From then to the present day, the history of Nevada is largely associated with the development of gambling, hotel business and other tourist-oriented industries in the state.

In 1936, the famous Hoover Dam was completed on the Colorado River, which forms the border between the states of Nevada and Arizona.

This greatest construction of the period of the Great Depression firstly provided jobs for many people, secondly, attracted numerous immigrants to the region, and thirdly, provided the Las Vegas area with sufficient electricity, thereby making its development possible.

In 1941, the first hotel with a casino was built on the territory of the modern Strip of Las Vegas – “El Rancho Vegas”.
