Belize Overview
Belize [bə li ː z, Eng.; be lise, Spanish] state on the east coast of Central America. The former capital Belize (84,200 residents) is the main port. The north of the country is formed by a frequently swampy lowland, the south by a plateau cut up by many valleys. Mainly sugar cane, citrus fruits and bananas are grown.
History: The area of today’s Belize, originally settled by Maya, became a British colony (British Honduras) in 1862 . In 1973 it was named Belize and in 1981 it became independent under the Commonwealth.
