Made up of a complex of islands surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the English Channel and the North Sea, the United Kingdom is among the best defined regions in Europe. The ancient Albion (classic name by which it was indicated in Gaelic), but commonly known by the Greeks and Romans as Britannia (from the Latin root fretus, “Strait”, for which the Britons would be the “peoples of the strait”, that is, of the English Channel), owes much of its peculiar characteristics to its geographical position. The region’s insularity and peripheral location with respect to continental Europe have long contributed to its isolation, at least as long as the Mediterranean remained the hub of world trade. Subsequently, when the trade moved towards the northern seas of Europe, the country knew, during the reign of Elizabeth I, a profound transformation becoming the driving force of a gigantic human, political, economic and cultural expansion. After having opposed revolutionary France and then Napoleonic France, Great Britain experienced a general demographic increase, an increase in agricultural productivity and, in the last part of the 18th century, especially in the textile and metallurgical sector, the industrial revolution that would have made it “The workshop of the world”. In 1837, with the accession of Queen Victoria to the throne, Great Britain further strengthened its role as a world power but with the beginning of the new century the era of its expansion also ended. The first half of the twentieth century saw in fact the slow decline of the country which participated in a decisive way in the two world wars but which had to suffer a serious economic depression and the climate of austerity that marked the second post-war period. The second half of the century instead witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the laborious reconstruction of the country into a modern and developed state within Europe. Having definitively closed the imperialist phase, Great Britain has inaugurated a new process of integration and the search for a difficult balance between its own interests and those of both Empire and the laborious reconstruction of the country into a modern and developed state within Europe. Having definitively closed the imperialist phase, Great Britain has inaugurated a new process of integration and the search for a difficult balance between its own interests and those of both Commonwealth and of the European Union. After a troubled phase of workers’ unrest and trade union demands, exacerbated by the industrial crisis and its repercussions in the socio-economic field, the country has been able to renew itself through privatization policies, painful downsizing of the welfare state and structural reforms of the production system that have facilitated growth of the services sector. Since the early 1990s, Great Britain has experienced uninterrupted economic growth, in contrast to a much more precarious international economic picture. A healthy financial situation has allowed Great Britain not to suffer too much from the global economic crisis, making the government postpone any decision regarding the adoption of the single European currency. According to COUNTRYAAH, United Kingdom is a nation in Northern Europe, the capital city of which is London. The latest population of United Kingdom is 67,886,022.
