CLIMATE
As Tunisia stretches from the Mediterranean to the Sahara, its climate is naturally affected by both maritime and desert influences. The entire northern belt has a distinct Mediterranean climate, that is, with mild temperatures and rainfall almost exclusively in winter but characterized, as in the whole country, by great irregularity and variability. In general, on the maritime reliefs of the Tell, more directly affected by the humid winds coming from the NW, 600 to 1000 mm of rain per year fall; these values ​​increase on the better exposed slopes with a maximum of 1500 mm per year recorded in the extreme northwest, on the Krumiria mountains, near the Algerian border, while they decrease as we proceed towards the E (625 mm per year in Bizerte). The southern flank of the Tell, the Medjerda valley and the reliefs of Atlas receives on average only 400-500 mm of rain per year, however sufficient to determine the economic importance of the river and the plain it irrigates. The central part of the country is now a semi-arid steppe region, where rainfall averages 100-200 mm per year; similar values ​​are recorded in the eastern coastal plain (190 mm per year in Sfax, 175 in Gabès), whose rainfall is scarcely influenced by the presence of the sea. The south of Tunisia, completely arid, receives less than 100 mm of rain per year; the slopes of the Monti dei Ksour are an exception which, despite the modest altitude, manage to condense the humidity of the air; for example, in the Médenine area, 200 mm of precipitation is recorded annually. Despite the essentially NS development of the country, temperatures depend, more than by latitude, by the greater or lesser seaworthiness. In fact, the coastal plains have a very similar and limited annual temperature range, which is around 15 ºC (in Bizerte the average in January is 11 ºC, that in July of 25 ºC; in Sfax of 11.5 ºC and 26 ºC.); Frosty days are rare, while in summer the wind blows from the Sahara and the thermometer can exceed 40 ºC. Towards the interior, the climate gradually becomes more and more continental: in Gafsa (Qafsah) the average winter temperature is 9 ºC, the summer one approx. 30ºC; further to the S, in the long hot summers, it often exceeds 50 ºC in the shade, while in Thala, on the Atlas towards the Algerian border, the minimum temperatures are in winter. The reliefs, however, are not such as to determine a true mountain climate and they are not even able to block the ghibli, hot and dry wind from the Sahara, which can cause the thermometer to rise above 40 ° C.
