As a political creation, Suriname draws its origin from the struggles of the great European powers that in the century. XVII sought to impose their hegemony in the Caribbean Sea and on the northern coast of South America. The country was artificially created and has been maintained for over three centuries by European colonization; discovered by the Spaniards in 1499, it was from 1667 a Dutch colony of marginal interest for the motherland, which with absolute ease brought blacks from Africa, Indians, Indonesians, Chinese into the country, marginalizing the native Amerindians, and using the economic resources of the country without bring you significant benefits. The economy, however, continues to be structurally fragile even in these early years of the 2000s and is based on external aid to survive. According to COUNTRYAAH, Suriname is a nation in South America, the capital city of which is Paramaribo. The latest population of Suriname is 586,643.
GEOGRAPHY
The territory of Suriname is geologically constituted by a base of very ancient rocks, dating back to the Archaeozoic era, folded and metamorphosed and subsequently affected by granite intrusions, which give rise to the eminent forms of the reliefs; towards the coast, sedimentary soils of the Cenozoic era are replacedand more recent deposits. Morphologically the territory is mainly mountainous in the southern part with reliefs that stretch out with long ridges culminating at 1230 m in the Juliana Top (Wilhelmina Gebergte); at the extreme S, on the border with Brazil, runs the Serra Tumucumaque, which forms the watershed line between the Atlantic Ocean and the Amazon basin. For the rest there are large flat areas of alluvial origin, which near the coast become depressed in marshy areas. § Numerous rivers, rich in water due to the abundant rainfall, therefore generally navigable, given also the modest variation in flow rate over the course of the year, descend from the southern reliefs to throw themselves into the Atlantic, with a trend mostly parallel to each other: the main ones are the Coppename, Corantijn and Marowijne, the latter marking the western and eastern frontiers respectively. The Suriname River feeds the large Brokopondo Stuwmeer reservoir (also known by the name of WJ van Blommestein, the engineer who designed it) created in the 1960s for the production of hydroelectric power for the mining industries. § Located just N of the equator, between latitude 6º – 2º N, the country has an equatorial climate with average annual temperatures always above 20 ºC and very weak annual temperature variations. The rains generally exceed 2000-2500 mm per year; the rainfall regime presents two rainy seasons very close to each other, on the occasion of the double passage of the Sun at the zenith (zenith rains) interspersed with two short dry seasons.
