Located in the center of Europe, Slovakia extends along the northwestern end of the Carpathian mountain range, forming a physical barrier between the plains of Poland to the north and those of Hungary to the south. Mečiar and an economy still too controlled by the state led the successive administrations to adopt a more incisive policy of political and social reforms. The Slovakian territory is largely mountainous and is dominated by the western Carpathian chains that form an external arc to the west, including the Little Carpathians, the White Carpathians and the western Beskids while at the center of the system rise the peaks of the High Tatras, where there is the highest peak in the country, Mount Gerlach (2655 m), and those of the Low Tatras to which some minor chains, such as the Slovak Ore Mountains, are connected in the south-eastern area. The southern foothills of the Carpathians are flanked by fertile plains: to the SW the Michalovce plain, crossed by the Ondava, to the Southeast that of Bratislava, the widest Slovak plain, crossed by the Váh (first Slovak river with its 433 km) and the Danube. All Slovak rivers, with the exception of the Poprad to the North, flow directly or indirectly into the Danube; the Morava, which marks the border line with Austria, the Nitra and the Hron, the Hornad, the Bodrog and the Ondava to the East, the Tisza to the Southeast. The climate is continental and humid, with numerous precipitations and generally variable meteorological conditions. From spring to autumn, mild but rather rainy weather conditions can occur. Winters, in particular in the Carpathians, are rigid and rainfall is abundant (everywhere exceeding 1000 mm per year), while the flat regions are characterized by a drier climate and high summer temperatures.
