Located on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula, itself a peninsular territory stretching out over the Persian Gulf, Qatar is an Asian state with narrow borders, characterized by desert landscapes of dunes and sand that alternate with flat and remote lands and arid inland landscapes. But the real peculiarity of Qatar, protagonist of one of the fastest and happiest development and growth processes of the twentieth century, is to be found above all in the traces left by the modernization that has affected the country, starting from the economic and social structure, up to understanding also the transformation of infrastructures and the aspect of the environment. If, in fact, the neighboring countries bear imprinted on their territory the signs of a millenary history made up of great empires, commercial traffic, dynastic passages, colonial conquests and Bedouin culture, Qatar is a land that lives on its present, made up of skyscrapers, modern infrastructure, widespread prosperity. From the discovery of oil fields (in the 1940s, while the crisis linked to the collapse of the pearl market was consumed throughout the Gulf area) to today, the country has reinvested the proceeds deriving from the exploitation of oil and the increase constant in the price of crude oil bringing its population to a level of wealth per capita higher than that of all states in the world. In less than a century, Qatar has abandoned poverty and underdevelopment, opened up to a market economy and endowed its residents with an advanced system of social protection. The supporters of this transformation and guarantors of the necessary political stability were the members of the el-Thani family, in power in Qatar since about the eighteenth century, protagonists, especially during the twentieth century, of an enlightened government practice open to the growing stimuli of a increasingly globalized world. Despite these openings, not taken for granted in a world that still shares several conventional traits with its more “traditionalist” Arab neighbors (starting from the Wahhābite religion), the multiethnic society of Qatar (made up of Westerners employed on oil platforms but also of Indian, Pakistani, Filipino immigrants, etc.) still hides a discriminatory treatment against foreigners, largely excluded from the social benefits enjoyed by indigenous citizens. According to COUNTRYAAH, Qatar is a nation in Western Asia, the capital city of which is Doha. The latest population of Qatar is 2,881,064. GEOGRAPHY
Qatar has a well-defined territory, as it corresponds to the peninsula of the same name extending over 150 km in the southwestern section of the Persian Gulf. It consists of a desert plain with blankets of sand and rocks mainly made up of Eocene limestone (Cenozoic era) affected by karst phenomena; the typically tropical climate is contrasted with torrid summers, with peaks of over 50 ºC, sometimes cool winters; there are no rivers and rainfall is almost absent.
