STATE NAME
The state of New Jersey (“New Jersey”) got its name in honor of the British island of Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands located in the English Channel.
GEOGRAPHY
The state of New Jersey is located in the Northeast of the United States and belongs to the mid-Atlantic states of the United States. The territory of the state of New Jersey is 22,608 km2 (47th place among the states of the USA). In the north and northeast, New Jersey borders on the state of New York, and immediately after the Hudson River separating them, the largest US city, New York, is located. New Jersey borders Pennsylvania to the west and Delaware to the southwest. From the east, New Jersey is washed by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The main physiographic regions of the state of New Jersey are the Appalachian Ridge and Valley (“Ridges and Valleys”), the New York-New Jersey Highlands and the Piedmont Plateau, and also inner and outer coastal valleys, part of the US Atlantic Lowlands.
In northwest New Jersey, in the Appalachian Ranges and Valleys, the Kittatiny Mountain Range stretches. The mountains here are covered with deciduous forests (oak, hickory, maple, birch, walnut, ash), it is here that the highest point of the state is located – High Point (550 meters above sea level). It is interesting that the obelisk erected on High Point in honor of those who died in the First World War is visible from three states – New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. To the east are the plateaus of New York – New Jersey and Piedmont. It is a hilly area with numerous rock outcrops, streams and lakes. In the northeast of the state, along the Hudson River, the steep, almost sheer cliffs of the Pelisades, up to 160 meters high, rise for more than thirty kilometers. The northern and central regions of New Jersey are often referred to as the Skylands (“Sky Country”).
CLIMATE
New Jersey is characterized by a rather warm and humid temperate climate, which is greatly influenced by proximity to the ocean. In northeast New Jersey, the state’s largest city, Newark, the coldest month, January, has an average temperature of -4°C to 3°C. In the hottest month, July, the average temperature here ranges from 21°C to 30°C. In the resort city of Atlantic City, which is located in southeast New Jersey, in January it is usually from -2 ° C to 5 ° C, and in July from 21 ° C to 29 ° C. Precipitation is evenly distributed throughout all seasons, thunderstorms are quite common in summer. In late winter and early spring in New Jersey, once every few years, ocean storms come from the northeast, bringing blizzards and downpours.
ECONOMY
New Jersey is one of the most economically developed states in the US. It ranks seventh in the country in terms of GDP and eighth in terms of GDP per capita. Of the twenty-one counties in New Jersey, three are among the ten richest counties in the United States, with Hunterdon County ranked fourth on the list. In 2010, New Jersey ranked third in the United States (after the states of Hawaii and Maryland) in terms of the number of millionaires living here.
Very important to the economic prosperity of New Jersey is its geographic location, the state is often called the “crossroads of the US East.” The state’s extremely developed transportation system, which includes numerous airports, roads, bridges, tunnels, ports, ferries, a network of railway lines, provides daily transportation of millions of people and a huge amount of cargo. Sometimes the state is also called a “sleeping suburb”, because a significant part of the population New Jersey operate in the New York and Philadelphia metropolitan areas.
TOURISM
Tourism is very important to the state’s economy. New Jersey’s mild climate, numerous natural attractions (including one of the most popular US tourist attractions, the Delaware Valley National Recreation Area located on the border with Pennsylvania), and the sandy beaches of the Atlantic Ocean and Long Beach Island attract millions of vacationers every year..Interesting for tourists and numerous theme parks and attractions of the state. So, for example, Six Flags’ Big Adventure Park has the highest (139 meters!) And the second fastest roller coaster in the world. A number of resort towns and villages stretch along the coast of New Jersey, the most famous of which is Atlantic City. It was here that the first casino in the eastern United States opened in 1978.
