Nebraska is a state in the western part of the West North Central States group of the United States. Population 1,842,641 (2011). The state capital is Lincoln and the largest city is Omaha. Nebraska gained statehood in 1867, becoming the 37th state of the United States.
STATE NAME
The name of the state of Nebraska, like many other US states, came from the language of the Indian peoples who inhabited it. The natives of the “corn cob state” called the Platte River flowing through Nebraska Ni Brasge (in the language of the Oto people) or Ni Bthaska (in the language of the Omaha Indians), which means “flat water”. The first European explorers used this name for the lands they explored.
GEOGRAPHY
The state of Nebraska is located in the Midwest of the United States and belongs to the northwestern central states of the United States. The territory of the state of Nebraska is 200,520 km2 (sixteenth place among the US states). Nebraska is bordered by the states of South Dakota to the north, Iowa to the east, Missouri to the southeast, Kansas to the south, Colorado to the southwest, and Wyoming to the west. The state of Nebraska is located in two US time zones – central (eastern districts) and mountainous (western districts).
Nebraska is characterized by a relatively flat relief, the state is located entirely on the territory of the Great Plains of the United States. The eastern counties of Nebraska are located in the zone of the so-called “dissected plains” – gently sloping hills formed by glaciers. To the west, the terrain gradually rises, reaching a height of 1,653 meters above sea level at the highest point in the state – Panorama Point, located in southwestern Nebraska near the border with Colorado and Wyoming. In the north of the state there is a vast region occupied by sandy hills overgrown with grass – the Sand Hills.
CLIMATE
Nebraska has a continental climate with hot summers and cold winters, wetter in the east and arid in the west of the state. In eastern Nebraska, the state’s largest city, Omaha, average temperatures range from -10°C to 1°C in January and from 19°C to 31°C in July. In the city of Alliance, which is located in the west, the average temperature in January usually ranges from -11°C to 4°C, and in July – from 14°C to 32°C. Nebraska is located on “tornado alley”, in spring and summer there are often severe thunderstorms and tornadoes.
ECONOMY
The economy of Nebraska is based primarily on agriculture. In addition, financial companies and industrial enterprises operate in the state, cargo transportation is very well developed, and units of the US Armed Forces are based.
Several large American companies are headquartered in Nebraska, including Berkshire Hathaway (a holding company that invests in industry, transportation, publishing and other industries. Its chairman, Warren Buffett, is one of the richest people in the world), ConAgra Foods (manufacturing food products), Union Pacific (railway transportation), Valmont Industries (irrigation equipment manufacturer) and others. Union Pacific’s Bailey Yard is located in North Platte and is said to be the largest rail yard in the world.
TOURISM
The state has several tourist attractions associated with both the natural features of Nebraska and its history, primarily with the period of development of the Western United States. American pioneers Lewis and Clark traveled through Nebraska, the famous Oregon Trail and the Pony Express route of riding couriers passed here. Today, a number of objects in Nebraska have the status of National Monuments and are protected by the US government.
