STATE NAME
The name of the state of Nebraska, like many other US states, came from the language of the Indian peoples who inhabited it. The natives of the “corn cob state” called the Platte River flowing through Nebraska Ni Brasge (in the language of the Oto people) or Ni Bthaska (in the language of the Omaha Indians), which means “flat water”. The first European explorers used this name for the lands they explored.
