Nauru  is an island state of the central Pacific Ocean, located almost on the line of the Equator, to the west of Kiribati. Administered for nearly forty years by Australia, the island of Nauru is the smallest republic in the world. Officially it does not have a capital: the seat of the government is located in the town of Yaren, on the southern coast of the island. It was discovered only in 1798 and was soon exploited for its vast deposits of phosphates. After a troubled history, in which several colonizing powers have followed one another, Nauru presents itself, at the beginning of the 21st century, with a different aspect compared to other islands in the Pacific. Its population, in fact, has a per capita income modest but does not pay taxes; it therefore enjoys total gratuity in the fields of education, health care and all the main social services, and has always been dedicated to a wasteful and unbalanced lifestyle. According to COUNTRYAAH, Nauru is a nation in Micronesia, the capital city of which is Yaren District. The latest population of Nauru is 10,835.

NAURU
Independent since January 31, 1968, Nauru is a presidential republic within the Commonwealth; executive power belongs to the President of the Republic, Head of State and Government; assisted by a cabinet, he is elected for a three-year term by the members of the unicameral Parliament, which in turn holds the legislative power. Parliament is renewed by universal suffrage every three years. The system of law in use is based on the Common Law British; Nauru accepts, but with reservations, the enactments of the International Court of Justice. In the country there is a Supreme Court, District Courts and a Court for matters relating to family law; the death penalty is in force, even if no more sentences have been carried out since the signing of the Constitution. The defense system of the island is entrusted to a police force. Education is compulsory for students aged 6 to 16. Kindergartens, primary schools and secondary schools are state and free and the illiteracy rate recorded in the last survey was very low (5%). The university is an offshoot of the University of the South Pacific in Suva, Fiji.

GEOGRAPHY
Of madreporic origin, Nauru is entirely surrounded by a coral reef that emerges during low tide; inside there is a narrow sandy beach, then a strip of fertile land, 200 to 300 m wide, where the population is concentrated; the rest of the island is a domed plateau, which rises up to 65m and is covered by a large phosphate deposit. In a depression in the southwestern section is the Buada lagoon, where fishing is practiced. Given the astronomical position, at 0º.30´S, the climate is clearly equatorial, constantly hot (between 25 ºC and 34 ºC) and humid (on average 2000 mm of precipitation per year). The rainy season falls between November and February.
