Proceeding from the coast towards the interior, three morphological regions are distinguished: a coastal selvedge, low, sandy and generally straight (Namib desert), between the mouths of the Cunene to the N and the Orange to the S; an area of highlands dominated by irregular mountain massifs and culminating in Mount Brandberg (2579 m); finally, further to the E, vast tabular expanses of altitudes varying between 1000 and 2000 m which slope down towards the Etosha Pandepressions to the N and the Kalahari desert to E. § The climate is characterized by extreme aridity, due to the astronomical position (the country is in fact crossed by the Tropic of Capricorn); along the coast there is also the action of the Benguela current; rainfall, mainly in the summer, increases as it proceeds inland and varies from 50-100 mm per year in the Namib (one of the driest deserts in the world) to 350 mm in Windhoek; only in the extreme north-eastern edge is it exceeding 600 mm.
