According to citypopulationreview, Louisiana is a state in the southern United States, the 18th state to join the Union. The capital is Baton Rouge, the largest city is New Orleans (before Hurricane Katrina). Louisiana’s official nickname is the Pelican State. Named after the French king Louis XIV (in French pronunciation Louis).
In the past, Louisiana was the name given to the vast area near the Gulf of Mexico, controlled by the French. After the Louisiana Purchase, the southern part of this territory became the state of the same name.
STATE NAME
The name of the state of Louisiana came into English from French. It was the French conqueror of North America, Rene de La Salle, who was the first European to explore the lands of the Mississippi River basin, who gave them a name.
He named this territory La Louisiane, “Land of Louis”, in honor of Louis XIV (Louis XIV), who then ruled France.
Then Louisiana, or “New France”, was huge. It included the territories of the modern US states of Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Minnesota, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Wyoming, Texas, and Colorado.
After the United States bought France’s possessions in North America from France in 1803, new states of the United States were formed and in 1812 the state of Louisiana received its name.
GEOGRAPHY
The state of Louisiana is located in the South of the United States and belongs to the southwestern central states. The territory of the state of Louisiana is 135,382 km2 (31st place among the US states).
Louisiana is bordered by Texas to the west, Arkansas to the north, and Mississippi to the east. In the south, the shores of Louisiana are washed by the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Louisiana is part of the US Central Time Zone.
The state is located entirely within the Atlantic Lowlands, the average height of the relief of Louisiana is only 30 meters, and the lowest point (in the New Orleans area) is about two meters below sea level. There are two main physiographic regions on the territory of the state: lowlands in the south and hilly plains in the north.
Along the coast of Louisiana, extremely indented by numerous bays, there are thousands of islands, including a chain of barrier ones.
CLIMATE
Louisiana has a humid subtropical climate with long, hot summers and short, mild winters. Precipitation falls fairly evenly throughout the year.
