The country of Libya identifies itself territorially with the Mediterranean facade of northern Africa, in the section between the Maghreb and Egypt and politically corresponds to the former colonial domains that Italy conquered in 1911 from Turkey. Previously Libya as such did not exist; even the name became official only on January 1, 1934. There were instead Tripolitania and Cyrenaica, ancient regions overlooking the Mediterranean and that in the historical events of this sea (from the Phoenician to the Roman era, to the Arab expansion and then to the Ottoman conquest) have always been involved. The Fezzan was added to them, inland, Saharan region, conquered by the Italians in 1930 and thanks to which the country acquired a more varied, more complete territorial conformation, and a more African geopolitical structure. A vast but mostly desert country, Libya has always had its most populous and historically vital territories in the Mediterranean coastal strips, well defined on both sides of the Gulf of Sirte; however the predominant role acquired by oil in the world economy it has shifted the country’s interests towards the desert area which, rich in oil fields, has become the nerve center of Libya. From a political point of view, in 1969 the revolution led by Gaddafi established a regime inspired by an Arab socialism equidistant between the two Soviet and American blocs. After having shown for years its integralist component and supporter of terrorism and having forced the country to a difficult and burdensome embargo, at the beginning of the 2000s the Gaddafi regime began to show the more moderate, modern and secular part, placing itself in the eyes of of the West as one of the possible alternatives to the terrorist drift of Islamism. According to COUNTRYAAH, Libya is a nation in Northern Africa, the capital city of which is Tripoli. The latest population of Libya is 6,871,303. The aridity of Libya is very marked despite the fact that it overlooks the Mediterranean; the country is minimally affected, and only along the coast of Tripolitania and Cyrenaica, of the beneficial effects of the sea. For most of the year it is under the influence of the Saharan anticyclone which only in the winter months is attenuated to give way to cyclonic air masses of Atlantic origin according to the climatic mechanism of the Mediterranean area. The characteristic Libyan winds, those of Mediterranean origin (the Etesii) and those of Saharan origin, in particular the Ghibli, are due to the exchanges between Mediterranean and Saharan air masses., the raging desert wind. However, the Saharan anticyclone has a dominant role and so the winter precipitations almost exclusively affect the two Mediterranean facades that flank the Gulf of Sirte, while the interior maintains a distinctly desert regime. On the hills of Cyrenaica, up to 500 mm of rain fall per year, but already on the mountains of Tripolitania it does not exceed 400 mm (200-300 mm in Tripoli). In the interior there is everywhere less than 50 mm per year and in Sabhā, for example, the average for several years has not exceeded 15 mm. Also with regard to temperatures, Saharan characteristics are found, attenuated on the coast by maritime influences, with significant seasonal differences. In Tripoli in January there are averages of 14 ºC, in July of 30 ºC. Inside (in Sabhā) the thermal excursions they are obviously more marked: January records averages of 13 ºC and July of 32 ºC with maximum values even of 50 ºC and minimum values even below zero.
