Laos is a state of Asia, narrow in the eastern part of the Indochinese peninsula between some of the most tormented states in all of Asia, Laos develops geographically following the long riverbed of the Mekong, until it gets lost in the thousand streams of the lower course. Without any outlet to the sea, isolated within its mountain ranges, the country was in the past a point of convergence of peoples and cultures that have stayed here. The lack of large flat expanses has hindered the emergence of lasting and influential state organizations, favoring, on the contrary, the formation of small politically subjugated kingdoms to a greater or lesser extent to their more powerful neighbors. Always devoted to agriculture, albeit not intensively given the morphology of the territory, Laos has gone through the political changes that have woven national history and influenced the economic mutations that followed, transforming its physiognomy from that of a structure organized on a feudal basis, to one centered on the modern principles of the market economy. Laotian culture, however, survived these transformations in a vital way, at the same time overcoming the strong pro-Chinese and pro-Western pressures, an expression of the different social, political and economic conceptions of the powerful and influential neighbors, marking a further stage with the transition to the republican system in the political transformation of the entire Indochinese area. At the national level, however, the collectivization of the means of production following the conquest of independence, the imposition of an economic model socialist and the liberal matrix of the last decades of the twentieth century, have not been able to give the country a more modern character, capable of making up for a situation of almost chronic underdevelopment and ending, indeed, to mark an ever greater dependence on importing countries, almost to the point of jeopardizing the very independence of the state. The population of what was once known as “the kingdom of a million elephants”, continues to live, therefore, in situations of extreme poverty (in 2005 the UN canceled the country’s debt, characterized by a chronic deficit), under the weight of profound social and political discrimination that still persists: from the inequality between the sexes to the government repression of ethnic minorities, from the low diffusion of female literacy to the high percentage of women who do not survive childbirth). According to COUNTRYAAH, Laos is a nation in Southeastern Asia, the capital city of which is Vientiane. The latest population of Laos is 7,275,571. CLIMATE
The Lao climate is tropical monsoon with two well-differentiated seasons, a humid one from May to October and a relatively dry one from November to April: more than 80% of the rainfall is concentrated in the wet season. Average rainfall values exceed 2000 mm per year on the heights of northern Laos and are around 1000-1500 mm per year in lower Laos. Temperatures are high, with limited temperature ranges, in the flat areas (in Louangphabang, at 350 m altitude, the average temperature in January is 22-23 ºC, that of July 27 ºC), while they drop significantly in the upper Laos, where excursions become more marked; on the highest peaks there are also periods of frost.
