History: In ancient times Cyprus was settled by Greeks and Phoenicians, in the year 58 BC. It was conquered by the Romans. The island became an independent kingdom in 1193 but, after having been part of Venice for almost a century, came under Turkish rule in 1571 and British rule in 1878. Cyprus had been a British crown colony since 1925. After violent unrest, it became an independent republic in 1960; Archbishop Makarios was President of the Republic from 1960–77.

Conflicts between the Greek and Turkish ethnic groups rocked the country during these years. A coup against Makarios, supported by the military dictatorship in Greece, led to the occupation of the northern part of the island by Turkish troops in 1974. The Turkish Cypriots proclaimed the “Turkish Federation State of Cyprus” there in 1975 and the “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus” in 1983; the internationally recognized Cypriot government exercises power only over the southern part of Cyprus. Since 1998/99, Greece and Turkey have intensified their efforts to resolve the conflict. Negotiations about it failed in 2003, so that in 2004 only the Greek part became a member of the European Union. In 2008 new talks began to overcome the division of the island. But all talks about reunification have so far remained fruitless.
Vegetation
The image of the vegetation of Cyprus is anthropogenic and characterized by the contrast between the wide, treeless and vegetation-poor areas of the Cypriot plateau and the wooded mountains. Today, Macchie (in the west) and Garigue are the most widespread plant communities in the hill countries. Large parts of the mountains have been reforested. In the highest parts of the Troodos, i.e. H. Above 1,600 m above sea level, populations of black pine (Pinus nigra) have been preserved. The poisonous stink juniper (Juniperus sabina) is also widespread in the summit region of Chionistra. Incidentally, especially the Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis) stock-forming. Up to 1,700 m above sea level there are stocks of Lebanon cedar(Cedrus libani) in some places, which are both frost-resistant and can withstand severe drought, but cannot cope with the summer heat of the plain.
