The sultanate of Brunei, consisting of two small portions of territory surrounded by East Malaysia (which also interrupts its territorial contiguity), is located on the island of Borneo hence the name of the state itself. Passively involved in the colonial divisions following the nineteenth-century conquest of those lands, Brunei turned to English domination hoping to maintain a statute of greater independence. The link with the British government has left evident signs in the country even after the decolonization phase: as in all states not yet completely freed from the colonial heritage, this condition has translated into a present characterized, on the one hand, by a heterogeneity ethnic and cultural, also dictated by the deep ties with Malaysia; on the other, by an economic propensity for commercial traffic, at the same time squeezed between conflicting interests (local, regional and transnational); on the other, from a certain instability from a social and political point of view, despite the high standard of living of the residents, due to the difficult process of modernizing state structures in a context that is in some ways still rigidly traditional, as evidenced by the 500 years of government continuity of the Bolkiah dynasty. At the same time, the country’s commitment in attempting to overcome internal criticalities proved to be particularly intense: the major interventions recorded concerned, for example, education, in order to also train a skilled local workforce; the health system, extended free of charge to all residents; a significant share of tax incentives and exemptions in sectors not related to the exploitation of hydrocarbons. According to COUNTRYAAH, Brunei is a nation in Southeastern Asia, the capital city of which is Bandar Seri Begawan. The latest population of Brunei is 437,490. PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY
II Brunei includes 2 small territories located on the northern coast of the island of Borneo, facing N to the South China Sea and geographically inserted in the State of Sarawak. The country extends along the coastal plain between the course of the Baram River and the Bay of Brunei. The coastal strip, often swampy and bordered by mangroves, is followed by a limited area of crops along the first elevations of the Banjaran Crocker (the coastal chain of Malaysia that stretches between Sarawak and Sabah) and extensive forests. The country’s climate is tropical, however mitigated by the presence of the sea. Rainfall is abundant, mainly in the monsoon season.

HUMAN GEOGRAPHY
The population is made up mainly of Malaysians (66.3%); there are also groups of Chinese (11.2%) and Tamil Indians (10.7%); the interior of the country is inhabited by indigenous tribes (Dayak etc.). The Chinese, who constitute the most active and enterprising component, were previously much more numerous; after 1990, coexistence with the Malaysian component has, however, become difficult: no longer sufficiently protected within the new political order, the Chinese have preferred to emigrate in large numbers. The average density is 70 residents/km² but the distribution is not homogeneous: most of the population lives in the coastal areas of the largest appendix, in particular in the capital district and in urban areas rather than in rural ones. Bandar Seri Begawan (formerly Brunei) is the ancient capital, located in a picturesque cove in the bay of Brunei; other important centers are Seria and Kuala Belait, two industrial cities developed near oil fields.
