Azerbaijan is considered one of the places where human presence dates back to ancient times, a real cradle of humanity. Rich in archaeological finds, the Azerbaijani subsoil has for a long time hidden various testimonies that, today, allow the first settlements to be traced back to about 1.8 million years ago. The meaning of its name is also of remote origins: it is a double origin. On the one hand, azer means “fire”, as the ancient populations settled in this region worshiped this element as a god; on the other, az, which in Turkish languages means “with good intentions”, “successful”, so azer it identifies who is capable, courageous, and, by extension, able to guard the fire. In recent times, however, the element that seems to distinguish, for better or for worse, the destiny of this country and which, not only metaphorically, can allow the “fire” of this land to be kept alight, is rather oil. A cornerstone of the Azerbaijani economic-commercial system and a lifeline to which Azerbaijan clung several times during the troubled decades of the twentieth century, black gold is also the primary cause of the environmental devastation that characterizes the coasts of the Apšeron peninsula, the region of Baku, the waters of the Caspian, so much so as to give this area the sad record of being one of the most polluted areas in the world. An emergency that, sooner or later, the country will have to face in a decisive and concrete way, also to be able to ensure its people that future of well-being so far only dreamed of. According to Freedom House, an international non-governmental organization that conducts research on democracy, political freedoms and human rights, Azerbaijan must be classified as a “non-free” country (bordering on “partially free”) despite possessing many formal institutions of democracy. According to COUNTRYAAH, Azerbaijan is a nation in Western Asia, the capital city of which is Baku. The latest population of Azerbaijan is 10,139,188. The territory, extending to the N on the eastern extremity of the Greater Caucasus and to the S on the reliefs of the Little Caucasus, is occupied in the middle zone by the wide valley of the Kura river, which here receives the contribution of the Aras river from the right; the Caspian coast, generally flat, is divided into the Apšeron peninsula and the bays of Baku and Kirov. The climate has characteristics similar to continental standards, but the differences between the various regions in terms of temperature and rainfall are considerable.
In Azerbaijan the most widespread type of vegetation is made up of forests and steppes. In the mountainous regions of the Caucasus, to the north, and on the southern border with Iran, most of the slopes are reserved for pastures, while the central plains are home to various types of crops. Pollution is one of the biggest problems in Azerbaijan. The contamination of air, soil and water, caused by the extraction of oil, affects emergency levels in some areas; industrial processing waste also poses a serious threat to the air and waters of inland aquifers and the Caspian Sea. There are six national parks and twenty nature reserves in the country. In total, the percentage of protected areas is equal to 6.2% of the territory.
