The Republic of Mali has been ruled by a military junta headed by the so-called interim president, Colonel Assimi Goita, since August 2020, following a military coup. Since the split with France, which had enormous influence before the coup in Mali, trade partners have been diversifying. From the end of 2021, Russia’s influence in Mali is growing. The environment is purely francophone, in the case of trading, knowledge of French is a must. In terms of security, it is more or less possible for foreigners to move with caution only in the capital city of Bamako. Check prozipcodes for Mali defense and foreign policy.

  • System of governance and political tendencies in the country
  • Mali is led by a military junta that came to power in a coup in August 2020 and has been in power ever since under a so-called transition period that is still extending. The government enjoys more popularity than the previous one that was overthrown.
  • Foreign policy of the country
  • After the split with France and the dismissal of the French ambassador and the defense agreements, Mali is focusing mainly on Russia, Turkey, the UAE and Algeria. Following the experience with France, they are trying to diversify their partners.
  • Population
  • The population is made up in the south and center of the country mainly of black ethnic groups Bambara, Soninke, Dogon, Fulani, Bozo, Malinke and Songoj, in the north of the country then Tuaregs and Arabs. Ethnic clashes still occur today between the Dogon and the Fulba. On the contrary, the Touaregs do not come into conflict with black ethnic groups, as is often fondly claimed.

The system of governance and political tendencies in the country

Mali, or the Republic of Mali, is a unitary state headed by a president. As of May 2021, after the second “coup within a coup”, the transitional government is headed by the politician Assimi Goïta, who was inaugurated as the transitional president of Mali on 7 June 2021. Choguel Maïga was appointed Prime Minister. The security situation in the country can be considered very bad and, according to the classification of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, category F. The UN evaluates its mission in Mali as the most risky of all its existing missions. The 2015 Algiers Peace Agreement has not yet been implemented, and the consolidation of state administration in the northern regions of the country, and especially in central Mali affected by insurgent, terrorist and robbery activities, and thus a significant improvement in the conditions for economic growth cannot be expected. The split between the Malian government and France is fundamental, which occurred continuously during the second half of 2021, mainly due to the further extension of the transition period, accusations of the Malian government’s inability to hold elections and disagreements on security issues, and France’s announcement to reduce its military presence in the country. Everything continued with the deepening of cooperation with Russia, the invitation of Russian instructors and the acquisition of Russian weapons. In addition, there are currently around a thousand contractors of the Russian private Vagnerovi group operating in Mali. Relations with the Western community and France further deteriorated with the announcement of the withdrawal of French troops from the Barkhane combat mission, the withdrawal of the EU special forces mission Takuba, the expulsion of the French ambassador from Mali and, currently, the termination of defense agreements with France. In addition to the escalating jihadist attacks, bloody ethnic clashes continue to appear. It is expected, that security in the country will continue to deteriorate hand in hand with the unclear situation in the state administration. Due to the security operations of the Malian armed forces with the Russians, the activities of the UN MINUSMA mission, the EU EUTM training mission and the EU EUCAP civilian mission are limited. Check cancermatters to learn more about Mali political system.
