History

The history of Mackenzie Presbyterian University (MPU) dates back to the 19th century, when Presbyterian missionaries George Whitehill Chamberlain and his wife founded the “American School” in São Paulo. The foundation of the new school represented a turning point in Brazil. The school introduced a number of pioneering and innovative pedagogical and social practices. Among them, the end of racial discrimination in admissions (legally authorized by the government until then), the creation of mixed gender classes and the abolition of physical punishment. In 1897 in honor of John Theron Mackenzie, an American lawyer patron of its construction, founded the Mackenzie School of Engineering as a continuation of the American School.

In 1870 American Presbyterian missionary Reverend George Whitehill Chamberlain and his wife Mary Annesley founded a private elementary school within their home. Classes were held in his living room, and a few years later the so-called “American School” was established as a center of excellence in São Paulo.

Chamberlains ‘ American School was revolutionary by Brazilian standards at the time, as corporal punishment of students was not allowed, and both boys and girls were allowed to attend classes. Although the Chamberlains were openly Presbyterian, students of all ethnic backgrounds, social classes, and religious denominations were welcome.

The fame of the academic rigor of this school, combined with religious tolerance, soon became known in the United States. So much so, that in 1896, John Theron Mackenzie, a lawyer from Phelps, New York, and his sisters donated US $50,000 for the establishment of an engineering school to be built under the auspices of Mr. Chamberlain (George Whitehill Chamberlain) in Brazil.

In 1896, the School of Engineering was established with the opening of “Mackenzie Building No. 1”. By then, the first seeds of the University were sown. The new building gave rise to Mackenzie College, which soon began offering various courses. the institution saw a rapid expansion of its activities with the creation of a School of Architecture, a School of Economics, and a Faculty of Law.

After six decades of tradition in offering solid scientific training, the Brazilian government granted the institution the status of a University in 1952. The contributions of the Institution to the socioeconomic and technological needs of the country were recognized.
