“Rio de Janeiro of the Old World” is how Lugano, a lakeside city in the Italian part of Switzerland, is called for its temperament and climate. Lugano also has its own small Agno airport, from where Darwin Airlines flies to London via Bern, as well as to Rome (Fiumicino airport), Geneva and Olbia (Sardinia). Flybaboo flies to Geneva, Swiss to Zurich.

There is one mail bus a day to St. Moritz through Italy on a scheduled Friday to Sunday (daily from June to mid-October and from late December to early January). The cost is Sfr67 (minus Sfr15 when using the Swiss pass), the journey takes 4 hours. You can reserve a seat at the bus stop, at the railway station or by calling 091 807 85 20. Weather in Lugano

The climate in Lugano is uniform, comfortable, not hot. The average annual temperature is +11.5 °C. The winters here are not very severe, and the real spring begins in early March. Warm autumn days last until November.

Transportation

Buses leave for the airport from Piazza Manzoni (one way/round trip Sfr10/18) and train station (Sfr8/15). The timetable is available at the tourist office. Taxis can be ordered by phone: 091 971 21 21 and 091 971 91 91. To the airport it will cost Sfr20.

Bus number 1 runs from Castagnola in the east through the center to Paradiso, bus number 2 runs from central Lugano to Paradiso, stopping at the railway station. A single trip costs between Sfr1.20 and Sfr2 depending on the distance, or Sfr5 for a day pass. The main car terminal is located on Pestalozzi street.

Entertainment and attractions of Lugano

The City Museum of Fine Arts (Städtisches Kunstmuseum) was founded by Antonio Caccia in 1893. A separate pleasure for both adults and children is a visit to the Alprose Chocolate Museum, which is also located near Lugano. It is considered the only museum in the world of this universally loved delicacy.

Park Ciani (or Civico Park) on the shore of the lake, not far from the city center, is considered one of the most beautiful parks in Switzerland. A large collection of subtropical flora, palm trees, exotic plants, roses, azaleas, magnolias and camellias, as well as bright Mediterranean vegetation are available.
