The city has a population of 33,088 people according to the 2010 census. It is situated on the east side of the Stones River and borders Smyrna to the north and Murfreesboro to the south. La Vergne has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters.

The city was founded in 1856 by William F. Lytle and was originally known as “Mulberry.” In 1877 it was renamed La Vergne after one of its earliest settlers, Louis de la Vergne. The city has a rich history that includes being home to a Civil War battle site and having its post office destroyed by an accidental fire in 1904.

The politics of La Vergne are primarily conservative, with Republican candidates dominating local elections for many years.
