Nicodemus National Historic Site

Located in the state of Kansas, Nicodemus National Historic Site has played a significant role in the history of the United States of America. The city symbolizes the pioneering spirit of African-Americans who dared to leave the war-torn South for a taste of true freedom and unified government. The city was founded in 1877 by African Americans during the period of restoration of numerous sites that were damaged during the American Civil War.

Around 1870, the black population in the South became unusually restless due to situations related to the Civil War. All attempts to negotiate peace and win freedom, equality and prosperity for these people have failed. Instead, they got racism, oppression, poverty, starvation and debt. At the same time, a white man named WR Hill passed through and gave black families hope and a new purpose in life. He told them about the “Promised Land” in Kansas and the countryside of Kentucky and Tennessee. Hill told them of a sparsely populated area where large numbers of wildlife roamed, including wild horses that could be tamed, tamed, and trained to serve humans. Here they had the opportunity to have their own land, their own fields and be their own master. The black population did not hesitate for a moment, they fled their enslavers for a better life in Kansas.

The town of Nicodemus was a reflection of the unity, perseverance and spirit of African Americans who came to the American West. These people were mostly freed or escaped slaves who fought for their place on earth and were not going to give up their freedom just like that. The city thus became a kind of refuge where all the “colored” people of the United States were supposed to be safe. Today, Nicodemus is a so-called ghost town that has received such recognition that it was declared a National Historic Site in 1996.
