Population and Religion

Vietnam has 95.5 million residents (2018), which is a good 12 million more than in Germany. The population lives mainly in the plains on the Red River and the Mekong. Despite the high density of settlements in some places, Vietnam is a land of villages. Only a third of the population lives in cities (Germany: 77%). Since the end of the Vietnam War in 1975, over two million people have left the country as refugees.

The Vietnamese national people, also known as Kinh, make up 86% of the population. There are also around 50 ethnic minorities, most of whom live scattered in the mountain regions. Large groups of Chinese live in the cities. The Buddhism is the largest religion. Catholicism, Confucianism, Daoism and mixed religions are also represented. Over 80% of the Vietnamese do not officially belong to any religious community.

For many Vietnamese, the standard of living has improved significantly since the 1990s. Most have access to safe drinking water and adequate medical care. However, the consequences of the use of poison gas during the Vietnam War can still be felt today. Many cancers and malformations in newborns are attributed to the use of the defoliant Agent Orange. Check campingship to see Trips to Vietnam.
