Politics

According to the constitution, which came into force on April 6, 2017, Thailand is a constitutional monarchy. The head of state and commander in chief of the armed forces is the king, whose person is considered inviolable. It can issue emergency ordinances with the force of law, which must be confirmed by parliament. A privy councilor appointed by the king acts as an advisory body. After the death of King Bhumibol Aduljadeh († 13.10.2016), his son Maha Vajiralongkorn took over the office and was crowned as Rama X as the new king in May 2019. Check sportsqna to see Thailand a Beach Paradise of Sun and Smiles.

The National Assembly is responsible for the legislature. As a bicameral parliament, it consists of a house of representatives (lower house) and a senate (upper house). The President of the House of Representatives is also President of the National Assembly. Of the 500 members of the House of Representatives, which has a legislative period of four years, 350 are elected directly in single-electoral districts and 150 via party lists. The National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), formed by the army leadership after the military coup in 2014, appoints a committee that selects the members of the Senate who are appointed by the king on the proposal of the NCPO. The Minister of Defense, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, the Commander-in-Chief of the Army, Navy, Air Force and the Police belong to the Senate by virtue of their office. The term of office of the 250 senators is five years. The Prime Minister and up to 35 ministers are appointed by the King and form the Council of Ministers as the executive body. The first parliamentary election after the 2014 military coup took place in March 2019. It secured power for the military junta, while the prime minister remained a general Prayuth Chan-ocha .

The domestic political situation is characterized by the conflict between the “yellow shirts”, to which above all the loyal upper bourgeoisie and the army belong, and the “red shirts” of the mostly poorer sections of the population. There is also a separatist movement of Islamic Malays in southern Thailand.

In terms of foreign policy, the US is Thailand’s closest ally. Thailand is a founding member of ASEAN. Border disputes with Laos , Myanmar and Cambodia strain relations with neighboring countries.
