Hawaii is a state in the United States of America and comprises the Hawaiian Islands in the central North Pacific. The archipelago consists of eight main islands and extends over a total area of approximately 28,300 square kilometers (the land area is 16,634 square kilometers). The capital Honolulu is on the island of Oahu.
The 50th state of the USA is around 4,000 kilometers from its motherland and consists of a total of 137 islands, atolls and cliffs, the latter of which are mostly uninhabited coral islands. There are 40 mostly extinct volcanoes on the archipelago, including the Hualalai and the Haleakala, both of which are considered to be still active volcanoes. About 99% of the land mass of Hawaii is accounted for by the eight main islands of Hawaii (Big Island), Maui, Oahu, Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, Niihau and Kahoolawe. Of these, Big Island is larger than all the other islands put together. The total size of the Hawaiian Islands corresponds roughly to the state of Schleswig-Holstein.
As a state located in Oceania defined by programingplease.com, the individual islands of Hawaii are of different widths by straits called channels, separated from each other. The distance between the islands is often considerable. The neighboring islands of Kauai and Oahu are 115 kilometers apart and there is not even visual contact. The coasts of Hawaii appear to be continuous from a distance Green land mass that only dissolves into sharp, rugged rock formations up close, which is typical for the Pacific region. Steep cliffs are found to the west and east of Oahu, the northern Big Island, and the shores of Lanai, Maui, and Molokai. The storm surges and torrential rain that have drawn over these rocks for thousands of years have formed bizarre and often tooth-like pinnacles that look like cones arranged one behind the other on Molokai. Other coastal regions consist of flat lava rock and gentle bays, which are often used as harbors because of their protected location. The flat coastal areas are covered with soft sand, some of which are only a few meters wide and in other places extend over several kilometers.
Behind the coast, the Hawaiian Islands are shaped almost everywhere by high mountain ranges in which deep valleys have cut. The volcanic peaks of Hawaii are not only very high, they also have an enormous depth, as they reach far deeper into the sea than they protrude above the water. So is Mauna Kea with its 4205 meters not only the highest mountain in Hawaii, if we include its up to 5,400 feet sub-sea base, adding that he has a total height of over 9,000 meters, making it even provides over Mount Everest. Just behind is the Mauna Loa, which has the largest volume of the earth and with its sheer mass demonstrably deforms the enormous Pacific plate.
The valleys in Hawaii are characterized by lush vegetation and impressive waterfalls. Towards the sea they run out in funnel-shaped openings and are used intensively for agriculture in these areas. If you follow the valleys towards the mountains, they become increasingly narrow and rugged, and the rivers near the sea are quite sluggish transform into raging mountain streams that cascade down into the depths in magnificent waterfalls. Some of these valleys are also known as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific”, as the mountain streams here have dug themselves up to 600 meters deep into the ground and offer magnificent natural spectacles.
