Since the end of the 19th century, the world-famous Evian mineral water has been produced here.

The resort gained its fame precisely because of the healing properties of this very water, which were discovered at the end of the 18th century.

A bit of history

The history of the popularity of the balneological resort of Evian began in 1790 with one small private fountain of St. Catherine, from which Count Leather, who suffered from kidney and liver disease, liked to quench his thirst. He praised the healing properties of local water so much that some doctors began to recommend it to their patients. In 1807-1808, research was carried out and the healing properties of local water were discovered. Shortly thereafter, in 1809, a port on the lake and a new road connecting the city with Paris and Milan were built, and in 1823 the Genevan entrepreneur M. Falconnet opened the Evian mineral water company. In 1827, he purchased two springs, the most famous of which is Kasha (Cachat), named after the family that sold it. Eventually, Falconnet went bankrupt and the Hôtel des Bains bought out the sources.
