Introduction

Local customs

Eritreans are very similar to the inhabitants of Ethiopia, especially its Amharic-Tigrean part, in terms of clothing, food, customs and writing. Even in Eritrea, the most important and only relevant piece of information in a postal address is the post office box (POBox) number, however, unlike Ethiopia, the streets have their own names. Even Eritreans, like the people of Ethiopia, do not have surnames. The second name is the father’s first name (or the third was the grandfather’s first name), but in social interaction you only hear the first, own first name, with which the person must be titled. In the capital, it is not a problem to walk the streets day or night, with virtually no danger of being harassed by beggars or pickpockets.
