- Bennett College was founded August 1, 1873 as a normal school for teacher training. It opened with seventy African-American men and women ( freedmen, or former slaves). The school’s founder, Albion W.
- Bennett College was founded in 1890 at Irvington, New York by May F. Bennett. In 1907 the college moved to its final home on 22 acres (89,000 m 2) in Millbrook, Dutchess County, New York.
